Not only are they annoying, but they can prove challenging to eliminate. With breeding grounds varying from decaying fruits and vegetables to organic materials found in drains and other wet areas, what begins as a few flybys can turn into a full blown infestation in no time. Despite their size, these flies can have a big impact on your business by contaminating food, damaging your brand image, and potentially leading to failed health inspections. The prolific breeding and rapid development of small flies mean immediate actions need to be taken as soon as they make an appearance. Did You Know? • An adult small fly can lay up to 100 eggs per day, each developing into an adult fly in 10 to 20 days, ultimately resulting in a population explosion. • Small flies are active all day, searching for food, water, and suitable breeding sites – they continue to fly at night as long as the lights are on. • Favorite forage areas for small flies include locations that are highly visible to guests – around salad bars, bread cases, served food items, ice machines, garbage containers and more. • Flies are less active at night and can often be found resting and grooming on walls and other surfaces away from breeding sites, where they can transfer breeding material and possibly pathogens. • Adult dark-eyed small flies can live for more than four weeks, giving them plenty of time to explore your entire facility and find the best places to breed.
